Yoga is started in ancient India almost beginning of the civilisation especially it is practised in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism to get mental peace and physical body structure.

Surya Namaskar - King of Yogasana

Yoga is more than the stretching and strengthening poses called Asana or Yogasana. But Asana is only one aspect of a multidimensional system that includes Pranayama(Breathing practices) and Meditation.

The practice of yoga has been thought in the Indus valley civilisation around 3000 BCE. But according to the Vedic epic in Rigveda and Upanishsads, practice of yoga is the part of life.  Thus, there is no particular date when yoga is started.  Even though Bhagvan Vedavyas wrote Vedas before Mahabharat period.  Mahabharat is happened in Dwapar Yuga.  According to Hindu philosopher Yoga and Yoga Sutras are developed by Patanjali during mid 2nd Century BCE.

Yoga - Meditative and Spiritual Spirit with Physical Exercise

Outside India, Yoga has developed into a posture-based physical fitness, stress-relief and relaxation technique.  But in India Yoga has a meditative and spiritual spirit with physical exercise called Asanas.  According to the Samkhya philosophy, Yoga has its own knowledge gaining technique through physical exercises, ontology and metaphysics.

Yoga is introduced to the world especially in the west, in the late 19th and early 20th century by Swami Vivekananda.  People were very much inspired by Swami Vivekanda's outlook as well as his spiritual knowledge and gradually they started to become his disciple and followers.

Yoga and Nature

Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj" means Union.  Yoga unites our physical body structure with the inner strength of knowledge, ultimately reach peace or peace of mind.  Our body is made up of five elements called "Pancha Bhootas" i.e., Prithvi(Earth), Jal(Water), Agni (Fire), Vayu(Air), Aakasha(Space) - To control our body condition and the inner spirit - Yoga helps us.  If a person achieve this condition by controlling his "Manastatva"(control on one's mind) then this condition is called "Samadhi".  According to Panini and Vedavyasa, Yoga means "Samadhi" i.e., Concentration.
The main aim of Yoga is "Uniting" the "Human Spirit" with the "Divine Spirit".   According to the "Kriyayoga" the technical meaning of the Yoga is the "Union with the Supreme" due to the performance of our actvities in our day today's life.

Practice Yoga - In the Womb of Nature

One who practices Yoga regularly or follows the Yoga philosophy with a high level of dedication is called a Yogi(a man) or Yogini(a woman).

Goals

Ultimately Yoga leads to a person to get "Moksha". Moksha means liberation from "Janma" and "Mrittu" i.e., birth and death. A person when he became Yogi, he will come to know the existence of God and of God's relation to the world.  And finally he conjugated with "Bhagvat Tatva". Bhagvat Tatva is nothing but meeting and joining the "Supreme Power of the Brahmanda".

According to the "Astanga Yoga Shastr", the "Yogabhyas" or the "Practice of Yoga" is to achieve the state of Samadhi and abide in that state very carefully. Then the achiever is called  "Siddha Yogi".
