The Morgaon temple is the starting point of the pilgrimage of eight revered temples of Ganesha, around Pune, as well as the end of the pilgrimage. Because the Yatri or Devotee has to take Darshan of Lord Moreshwar Ganapati two times i.e., beginning of the "Yatra" or pilgrimage and end of the pilgrimage. If the pilgrim does not visit the Morgaon temple at the end of the Ashtavinayaka ("Eight Ganeshas") "Yatra", the pilgrimage is considered incomplete.  The Morgaon temple is described as "India's foremost Ganesha pilgrimage".

Legend According to Mudgala Purana and Ganesha Purana

Both the primary scriptures of the Ganapatya sect, Mudgala Purana and Ganesha Purana praise Morgaon Mayureshwar. According to Mudgala Purana 22 chapters are dedicated to describing the greatness of Lord Mayureshwara Ganesha. Ganesha Purana, describes Morgaon (Mayurapuri) is among the three most important places for Ganesha and the only one on earth (Bhuloka). The other locations are Kailash in heaven and Adi-Shesha's palace in Patala (underworld). Kailash is a mountain on earth in the Himalayas, where Ganesha's parents Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati are staying. According to a tradition, the temple is without beginning and without an end. And at the time of pralaya (the dissolution of the world), Ganesha will enter "Yoganidra" at Moregaon. Always Moregaon is compared with "Kashi", the sacred Hindu city in Uttar Prades, India.

A Ganapatya sect tells us how the Lord Brahma God of the creator, the Lord Vishnu God of the preserver and the God of dissolver the Lord Shiva, the Divine Mother Devi Parvati and the Sun-God Surya Narayana mediated at Morgaon to learn about their creator and their purpose of existence.  Lord Ganesha appeared in front of them in the form of an Omkara flame and blessed them and reveal that the service of all towards the "Brahmanda".

At Lenadri, Devi Parvati started penance on Lord Ganesha "the supporter of the entire universe" for twelve years to get Lord Ganesha as her son. Pleased by her penance, Ganesha blessed her by the boon that he would be born as her son. In due course, Lord Ganesha was born to Devi Parvati at Lenyadri and named as Gunesha by Lord Shiva. And at Lenadri, Lord Ganesha is worshiped as the son of Mata Parvati. Once little Gunesha nocked an egg from a mango tree, from which emerged a peacock. Then Gunesha mounted the peacock and assumed the name Mayureshvara and make peacock as His Vehicle. Lenadri is another Ashtavinayaka site count as the circuit of Ashtavinayaka.

Lord Gunesha Killed Demon Sindhu

Sindhu son of Chakrapani and Ugra was given the ever-full bowl of "Amrita" (Elixir of life) as a boon from the Sun-God called Surya Narayana. The demon was warned that he could drink from  the bowl without damaging the bowl and keeping its original form. So to protect the bowl, he swallowed it. Then Sindhu terrorized the three worlds, so the Gods request Lord Gunesha, son of Mata Parvati for help. Gunesha defeated Sindhu's army, cut his general Kamalasura into three pieces and then cut open Sindhu's body, emptying the Amrita bowl and thus killed the demon.

Lord Brahma built the Morgaon shrine and marrying Siddhi(Capability) and Buddhi(Inteligence) to Lord Gunesha. At the end of this incarnation, Gunesha returned to his celestial abode, giving his peacock mount to his younger brother called "Skanda", with whom the peacock mount is always associated.
