Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga at Amaleshwar

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga at Amaleshwar

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is on an island called Mandhatha or Shivapuri in the river Narmada and river Kaveri.  River Kaveri is a tributary of the Narmada river.  Mandhatha island is about 12 km from Mortakka village.  Mandhatha or Shivapuri is a small but beautiful island in the womb of nature, where Lord Shiva is worshiped as Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga.  The shape of an island looks like Sanskrit letter ॐ, because of this shape the Jyotirlinga is called Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga.   Mandhata or Shivpuri island is at Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh, India.  Here Lord Omkareshwar is also calling Mamaleshwar Jyotirlinga also called Amaleshwar Jyotirlinga.  The Mamaleshwar or Amaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple is located on the other side on the south bank of the Holy River Narmada on the mainland.  An island is 2.6 km2 (2,600,000 m2) in the area and can be approached by boats and bridges. Parallel there are two bridges that connect the island Mandhatha and the mainland where Lord Amaleshwara Jyotirlinga shrine and a number of other temples are also there.

The Sacred Narmada River

River Narmada is one of the most sacred rivers in India among other rivers such as the Ganga originates from Gaumukh, which is located at the base of Gangotri and Khatilang glaciers in Uttarakhand.  The Yamuna originating from the Yamunotri Glacier at Banderpooch peaks of the Lower Himalaya in Uttarakhand. The Godavari originates from Trimbakeshwar in the Nashik district of Maharashtra.  Saraswati originating in the Aravalli mountain range in Rajasthan. Sindhu originates on the Malwa Plateau in Vidisha district, Madhya Pradesh, and Kaveri originates at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri range in the Western Ghats, Kodagu district of Karnataka.  Narmada river is now home to one of the world's biggest dam projects.  And its belief of all Hindus including Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists, is, "Once they took a bath in any above-said rivers, their life will become pious".  That's why they visit these river places regularly and take a sacred bath and become pious.  Not only this belief, daily while bathing all Hindu devotees will chant a 'Mantra' meaning a hymn recite names of these seven rivers and take bath irrespective of the place means where ever they are.

नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलेऽस्मिन् संनिधिं कुरु ॥
Gangge Cha Yamune Chai[a-E]va Godaavari Sarasvati |

Meaning:
1: O Holy Rivers Ganga and Yamuna, and also Godavari and Saraswati,
2: O Holy Rivers NarmadaSindhu and Kaveri; Please be Present in this Water (and make it Holy).

Both the temples are called Jyotirlinga among 12 Jyotirlinga of Bharat Varsha or India. Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is the 4th Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlinga series in India.

Omkareshwar and Amaleshwar together is called a Jyotirlinga

There are two main Shrines of Lord Shiva on Shivapuri or Mandhatha, one is the Omkareshwar or "Lord of Omkara or the Lord of the Om sound" which is located in the island and the other one is the Mamleshwar meaning "Immortal lord" or "lord of the Immortals" located on the south bank of Narmada River on the mainland.  Lord Mamaleshwar is also calling Amreshwar or Amaleshwar Jyotirlinga.  Both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar Shivalingas are considered as the one Jyotirlinga.

Inside the Garbhagriha of Omkareshwar temple, we will take the Darshan of Lord Shiva as Omkar Shiva Linga, Goddess Parvathi mata and Lord Ganesh.  On Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga always water drop is falling.  Temples of Panchamukhi Ganesha, Govindeshwar, and Maa Annapurna. Omkareshwar temple always crowded, so there is a queue system. The main entrance gate is small. You have to walk on the stairs which are 70 steps.

The Twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India

According to the Puranas, Jyotirlingas are those places where Lord Shiva manifested as Jyoti form and established as Shivlinga.  The twelve Jyotirlingas are listed below.

By chanting this 'Mantra' meaning hymn, in morning and evening our sins will get lost what we did in last seven Janma.  In Hinduism we believe in "Punarjanma" meaning rebirth.

History of Omkareshwar Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga

According to the Purana, once Narad Muni Ji went to Vindhya Mountain on his routine trip to Brahmanda.  Here Narada Muni is the son of Lord Brahma and the devotee of Lord Vishnu, who is his grandfather.  Narada Muni's duty is wandering Brhmanda and collecting information and passing news among Suras and Asuras.  Here Suras meaning Gods and Goddesses and Asuras meaning Demons or Rakshasas.  Demons are the enemies of Gods but the great devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.  After looking at Narada Muni Vindhya bowed him and started narrating his prideful things after listening to Vindhya Mountain Narad Muni Ji replies, you have many qualities but Meru Mountain is higher than you. Then listening to this the Vindya Mountain becomes very sad.

Vindya Mountain had jealous of Meru Mountain. So he decided to do great penance of Lord Shiva. Then Vindya Mountain goes to Omkar place and made a Shivlinga from clay. He started the very hard penance of Lord Shiva. After few months Lord Shiva becomes pleased from the penance of Vindya Mountain and has come in front of him. Lord Shiva shows him, His divine form and blessed him. At that time all Gods and Rishi muni came and prayed to Lord Shiva to stay and blessed them always.

As per the desire of Vindhya Parvat, Lord Shiva performed two parts of His Linga called Omkareshwar. Then, one called Omkareshwar which is installed on Madhatha island and the other installed on mainland Amaleshwar. Even though the place and the temple of both Lingas are separate, the power and nature of both are considering the same.

After getting the desired blessings and boon from Lord Shiva, Vindhya Mountain starts to grow and becomes larger than Meru and other mountains. It is so big now it starts obstructed the Sun and the Moon.  To stop the growth of the Vindhya Parvata, people worry and go to the shelter of Agastya Rishi.  Then after listening to the prayer and request of the common people Agastya Rishi with his wife goes to Vindhya Mountain convinced him not to grow further till they come back from the penance. But Agastya Rishi and his wife never returned to Vindhya Mountain.  Because they want to stop the growth of the Vindhya Mountain forever and help the common people of the Universe.
