Omkareshwar - Lord Shiva takes His night Rest

Both Omkareshwar and Mamaleshwar are the form of the same Jyotirlinga. Mamaleshwar is on the south bank of the Narmada river, and Omkareshwar sits on the Omkar Parvat on Mandhatha island towards the north bank of the Narmada river. Maa Narmada is in the middle of both temples.

Maa Narmada is the daughter of Lord Shiva. The father has a special affection for His daughter, that is why Sakshat Omkareshwar and Mamaleshwar are seated on both sides of Maa Narmada.  And Lord Omkareshwar is the soul of Lord Shiva, then Mamaleshwar is the body of Lord Shiva, together fulfills the recognition of a Jyotirlinga.

Mythologies Related to Omkareshwar Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

As per one more legend, once there was a very fierce war between Deities and Demons.  Demons win the war so Deities go to the shelter of Lord Shiva and pray to Him. Lord Shiva gets to please with their prayer and devotion and finally appeared in front of them as Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga near the bank of the Narmada River where Mandhatha island. Then Deities start worship to Jyotirlinga and get powerful and defeated the Demons.

As per one more story, the Omkareshwara Jyotirlinga shrine is established by King Mandhata who was the ancestor of Lord Ram. King Mandhata was the devotee of Lord Shiva. He made this place his capital. Then this place later famous as Omkar Mandhata. That's why this island is also called Mandhata. King Mandhata did penance of Lord Shiva here for many years and pleased him. When Lord Shiva appeared in front of King Mandhata then Mandhata prayed to Lord Shiva a boon that resides on this island. That is why God got established here in Omkar or Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga form.

Lord Shiva Sleeps at Omkareshwar Mamleshwar Temple

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva will take rest in Omkareshwar Mamleshwar temple daily. After traveling on Earth as His routine Lord Shiva will come to Omkareshwar temple take a rest in the night.  That's why the daily temple priest does Shyana Arti of Lord Shiva.

And Omkareshwar is the only temple where Lord Shiva's Shayana Arti was done by the priests of the temple very secretly.  The Shayana Arti will be done at 08:30 pm daily.

Om Shaped Parikrama Path at Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

The Parikrama Path or Pradakshina Path on Mandhatha island looks like Sanskrit's auspicious letter OM from the height.  Many times devotees will go to Omkareshwar Shrine to take the Parikrama Path Darshan from Height.  This Om Parikrama Path is about 7-8 km long and the way is completely full of temples.  The starting point of the OM parikrama path at Omkareshwar temple near Narmadha ghat. Which is clockwise around the Omkareshwar temple.  The Parikrama path is some places upstairs and in some places downstairs.  There are many Aasrams, trusts, and resting places for the devotees in the way. You have to complete this path on foot only and it takes approximately, 3 to 4 hours easily.

Festivals and Fair at Omkareshwar Mamleshwar Temple

For any Shaiva Bhakta, Maha Shivaratri is the main festival and it celebrates a very grand way in all Shiva Devalaya.  Since Omkareshwar is the Jyotirlinga Shrine, Maha Shivaratri celebrates a very grandly and highly devotional day.  During Maha Shivaratri, a 'Jatra' meaning a fair is organized by the committee member of the Omkareshwar and Mamaleshwar temple.  During this period temple will open at all times.  The temple committee organizes lots of 'Bhandara' meaning feasts in many places.  Lakhs of Shiva devotees visit and enjoy the 'Maha Prasada' i.e., Bhandara from all over India.  To get Darshan and blessings of Lord Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga devotees will stand in the queue day and night.

There is a big fair organized on the Kartik Purnima. Lots of devotees come here to offer Prasada and get the blessings of Lord Mahadeva. Lord Shiva Arti is organized with great devotion.  Ganesh Chaturthi in 'Bhadrapada Masa' and Anant Chaudas or Anant Chaturdasi also celebrated here in the month of August or September very greatly.

Timing of Omkareshwar Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Omkareshwar temple opens daily early in the morning at 05:00 AM and closed the late night at 10:00 PM.  At Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple Shayana Arti will take place around 8:30 PM. After the Shayana Arti temple will close at 10:00 at night.  Here at Omkareshwar temple of Lord Shiva will take 'Shayana' meaning night sleep after His "Bhupradaskina" meaning His routine round to Earth.  Devotees can offer milk and water till 04:00 pm only.

Temple has closed for half an hour from 12:30 pm to 13:00 pm in the afternoon also because 'Maha Naivedya' meaning lunch to Lord Shiva.

Mamleshwar temple opens daily morning at 5:30 AM and closes in the evening at 9:00 PM.

Devotees will use boats for going to Omkareshwar or Mamleshwar temple and for Sangam of two rivers Narmada and Kaveri.

Devotees will take bath in the Narmada River, there are many Ghats for the devotees and tourists who want to take a holy dip in the Maa Narmada River.  Only you have to keep one set of extra clothes to change there.

Parthiv Linga Puja at Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga

Parthiv Linga Puja or Parthaveshwar worship is the special Puja of Lord Shiva, where Lord Shiva is being worshiped as the earthly Lord for years. This Puja or Worship can only be performed in Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Trimbakeshwar in Maharastra, and Mamaleshwar once again in Madhya Pradesh.  Maheshwar was the capital city of Kartaveera Arjuna, who was famous as a thousand-arms King called 'Sahasrabhau' meaning a thousand arms.   Trimbakeshwar is the tenth Jyotirlinga out of 12 in Bharat Varsha.  Mamaleshwar is the mainland of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga where the Mamaleshwar or Amaleshwar Jyotirlinga Shrine is situated.   In Partheshwar Pujan, devotees will worship 1325 Parthiva Shiva Lingas.  The great devotee of Lord Shiva, Devi Ahilyabai also did this thumb-shaped Parthiv Linga Pujan in Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga for years.  Ahilyabai Holkar was the hereditary noble Sardar of the Maratha Empire.  Lord Shree Ram also did Parthiv Shiva Linga prayer before going for war against Ravana and conquering Lanka.  In order to be more powerful than Lord Surya, God of Justice Shanidev also did Parthiv Shiva Linga prayer to please Lord Shiva.  Parthiv Shiva Linga prayer is equal to the fruitfulness of crores of worships and prayers.

Adi Shankara Charya, the founder of Advaita Siddhanta.  Advaita means one meaning no difference between Bhakta and Bhagavan.  Omkaar is composed of two words, 'Om' one meaning sound, and Akaar meaning Srishti. Both are one not two since Advait means "not two". Om beez mantra of Srishti, itself is the creator of Srishti.  Here at Omkareshwar Adi Shankara's Cave also there.

Because Adi Shankara Charya met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada in a cave at Omkareshwar.  This cave can be found even today just below the Shiva temple where an image of Adi Shankara has been installed.

Omkareshwar has lots of tourist destinations for travelers like Kajal Rani Cave, Gauri Somnath Temple, Siddhanath Temple, Peshawar Ghat, Ahilya Ghat, Ranmukteshwar Temple, and many more.
