Meditation - Remedy for Peace of Mind

Meditation is a practice of focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity to train attention and awareness to achieve a mentally clear and emotional calm, and stable mind with constant confidence.  But Scholars have found that defining meditation in words is very tough and difficult because only we can experience and achieve the ultimate peace.

Vedas, the ancient Hindu texts, first time declared about meditation on the name of "Dhyana" meaning focusing on a particular object or thought quietly and seriously for a period of time.  Dhyana was becoming one of the important activities of life, especially in Hinduism and Buddhism.  In Hinduism Lord Shiva is known as the God of Dhyana.  Lord Shiva will do the Dhyana of Lord Vishnu and means He will always concentrate Lord Vishnu as the Parameshwara.  And Lord Vishnu will do the Dhyana of Lord Shiva as the "Devadi Dev Mahadev".  Lord Shiva will sit in "Padma-Asana" and does Dhyana of Lord Vishnu.  And Lord Vishnu will sleep in "Yoganidra" and does the Dhyana of Lord Shiva and give the structure to the "Brhmanda" meaning the Universe.  


Dhyana The Spiritual Practice to Attain  Peace

Dhyana is the Sanskrit word and the root of the Dhyana is "dhyai", meaning 'to contemplate or meditate', in general, it's the spiritual practice to attain ultimate peace that is peace of mind in Hinduism and Buddhism.  The term "Meditation" is derived from Old French meditation, in turn from Latin meditation from a verb meditate, meaning "to think, contemplate, or meditate.

The Result of The Meditation

The result of the Meditation is to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and pain that are mental pain and physical pain of the body, and enhance peace, perception, self-concept self-confidence, and well-being.  And further research and studies are ongoing to better understand the effects of meditation on health that is psychological, neurological, and cardiovascular, and other areas.

Definitions of Meditation

However, the general definition of meditation is a spiritual practice to train the attention of the mind to achieve calm and ultimate peace. But there is no correct definition of meditation because its differ from place to place and a variety of practices for different purposes and different goal across many cultures.

The Scientific Definition of Meditation

According to the original Sanskrit word "Dhyana" meaning of "thinking deeply about something" to construct the wish according to the will; as well as the popular usage of "focusing one's mind for a period of time", meaning "the act of giving one's attention to only one thing, either as a religious activity or as a way of becoming calm and relaxed", further you can meditate for medication also and "to engage in mental exercise such as concentrating on one's breathing or chanting a mantra for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness".  Generally "Om" is the letter is used to reach a heightened level of spiritual awareness.  "ॐ" is a sacred, spiritual symbol, mantra, and mystical Sanskrit sound, used in Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism & esoteric religions. The word signifies the essence of the ultimate reality, consciousness, or Atman meaning soul or self within.

Psychological Definition of Meditation

According to the psychological research that is applied to cure psychological patients, meditation has been defined and characterized in a variety of ways. Many of these studies emphasize the role of attention and characterize the practice of meditation as attempts to get beyond the reflexive, "knowledge obtained by reason and argument logically, mindfulness" to achieve a deeper, more devout, or more relaxed state.

Adaptation of Meditation in All Cultures

Meditation is practiced in almost all religions apart from Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism.  The techniques of Asian meditation have spread to other cultures, where they have also started to application in spiritual to attain peace and non-spiritual contexts, such as business to get benefits and to attain good health.

Meditation is practiced in different cultures such as Taoism Daoist meditation, Judaism Jewish meditation called Kabbalah, Christian meditation called Hesychasm, Catholic Christianity, Islam Muraqaba, Sufism, Sema, and Dhikr, the Baháʼí Faith, meditation.  With this to do magic magicians practice the following meditation. Neo-pagan and occult Movements use magic, such as Wicca, Thelema, Neopaganism, and occultism.
