About Girijatmaj in Lenyadri

According to the 'Sthalapurana', Parvati the wife of Lord Shiva performed penance to beget
Ganesha at this place.

When Lord Shiva was meditating on "the supporter of the entire universe", Devi, Maa Parvati
asked Her husband Lord Shiva to bless a son who is the leader of the Devagana.  Then Lord
Shiva gave her a Mantra "Gam", by chanting this Mantra for twelve years, Lord Ganesha came existence a clay image on forth day of Bhadrapada Masa which came alive.  According to Ganesha Purana, Ganesha incarnated as Mayureshwar, who had six arms and a white complexion.  In Treta Yuga, He was born to Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati, for the purpose of killing the demon Sindhu.

At Lenyadri the central Ganesha image is Svayambhu (self-existent) with an elephant-face,like
all Ashtavinayaka temples.  The temple faces south and the idol seems to be little different from the rest of the Ashtavinayak idols means not well designed.  The idol faces north with its trunk to the left.  This idol can be worshipped by anyone, irrespective of cast and religion.  During day time this temple is always lighted up by the sun-rays and there is no electric-bulb.  Lenyadri is a series of 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves, located about 5km north of Junnar in Pune district in Maharashtra, India. Other caves surrounding the city of Junnar are Manmodi Caves, Shivneri Caves and Tulja Caves.  These caves are arise from Hinayana Buddhism almost dated between the 1st and 3rd century AD and the Ganesha shrine which situated in cave 7 is dated to the 1st century AD.

Stone Hill of Lenyadri
The temple has 307 steps and is carved out of a single stone hill.  The temple has a wide hall
with no supporting pillars. The temple hall is 53feet long, 51feet wide and 7feet in height.
