Previously Ranjangaon is called Manipur where Lord Shiva worshipped Lord Ganesha before fighting with the demon Tripurasura and got victory over Tripurasur.  After his victory over Tripurasur, Lord Shiva is called as Tripurari.  Therefore Mahaganapati is called "Tripurari Varado
Mahaganapati".  Mahaganapati means 'Powerful Ganapati'.  The word Ranjan means the delighted one.  Ranjangaon MahaGanpati is one among the Ashtavinayak.  Mahaganpati of Ranjangaon is located in Shirur Taluka of Pune District in Maharashtra, India.  On Pune - Ahmednagar Highway around 51 KM from Pune.

The idol faces the east, with its trunk pointing to the left, is seated in a cross-legged position with a broad forehead.

And it is said that the idol has 10 trunks and 20 hands. Mahaganpati is depicted as having eight, ten or twelve arms.

About Temple

The temple was built between the 9th and 10th century. The main temple was built by Shrimant Madhavrao Peshwa in 1790AD and appointed Mr. Anyaba Dev as a 'Archaka' for worshiping Lord Mahaganapati.  'Nagarkhana' means temple at the entrance to the temple of the temple is arranged above the entrance gate.  This Nagarkhana was inaugarated by Maharashtra's honourable Chief Minister Shri Monohar Joshi on 3rd May,1997.  The temple facing east has huge and beautiful entrance gate.

The Temple is so constructed that sun rays fall directly on Lord Ganesha's idol.  Whenever Shreemant Madhavrao Peshwa was going to war, he used to halt in the temple & have Mahaganapati's darshan.  The original Mahaganapati idol has 10 trunks and 20 arms, was hidden in a cellar basement becasuse of fear of muslim invasion.   Madhavrao Peshwa had built a stone sanctum around this swayambhu or self-originated idol.  He made a "Garbhagriha" in the storm cellar of the temple to keep the idol of Lord Ganesh.  Later on Sardar Kibe of Indore renovated the temple and constructed a central hall.  Sardar Pawar and Shinde also worked to raise a few small flats to stay devotees called Owaris.    Owaris are also used for meditation.  Morya Gosavi had presented an idol made of five metals to Sri Anyaba Dev, which is taken out on special occasion.
