Birth, Award, and Reward of Narendra Kumar Bull

Colonel Narendra Kumar, the "Bull" was born on 8th December 1933 in Rawalpindi, then British ruled India and now in Pakistan.  Colonel Narendra Kumar was awarded as PVSM, KC, AVSM, FRGS, and many more, and died on 31st December 2020.  He was an Indian soldier–mountaineer.  He was known for his adventure deeds i.e., a journey undertaken by a group of soldiers to climb mountains and research, across various mountain ranges such as the Himalayas and Karakorams, and respective subranges such as the Pir Panjals and Saltoro Mountains.

Narendra Kumar's Study of Siachen Glacier 

Siachen glacier study is a mission to obtain information by visual observation on Indian potential enemy Pakistan's movement.  This mission includes the military activities of Pakistan and the resources of an enemy, about the meteorological, hydrographic, or geographic characteristics of the surrounding of the Siachen glacier.  Colonel Narendra Kumar did a preliminary survey to gain correct information; especially: an exploratory, military survey of enemy territory.  His reconnaissance efforts on the Siachen glacier were key to the Indian Army's to build the Siachen glacier to make proper useful of the forward posts of the glacier in Operation Meghdoot in 1984.  He was the deputy leader of the first successful Indian Mount Everest expedition in 1965.  He was a recipient of multiple military and civilian honors including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal(PVSM), Kirti Chakra, Arjuna Award, and the Padma Shri.


Early life Of Narendra Kumar

Kumar's childhood and boyhood were spent in Pakistan at Rawalpindi.  Somewhat his nature was an adventure from childhood only, he joined scout in his school days and selected for World Scout Jamboree.  In 1947, he took part in the World Scout Jamboree to Paris at the age of 13, then representing the state of Punjab.  When he was returned from Paris by that time India was partitioned, as India and Pakistan.  His Muslim friends on his ship were de-boarded in Karachi while he landed in Bombay and now Mumbai.  He joined his parents who had moved to Shimla after the partition of India.  He had three brothers and two sisters; all the brothers would go on to join the Indian Army.

Army Life at the Age of 17 Onwards and Mountaineering

Kumar joined the Indian Army at the age of 17, in 1950.  At the Joint Services Wing then at the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, he earned his nickname "Bull," during a boxing match against a senior cadet called Sunith Francis Rodrigues, who would later become the Chief of the Army Staff.  Narendra Kumar would lose that an athletic match of boxing with the champion, but the nickname that he would earn from that fight, "Bull," would stay on through the rest of his career.  Like this Kumar was always shown his interest in adventures and won the love of his fans and become the admirable character in his life from his childhood only.

He was commissioned with the Kumaon Rifles, a regiment of the Indian Army, in June at the age of 21, in 1954, where he was exposed to winter sports and mountaineering.  Afterward, mountaineering becomes his passion for life and he tried his level best to make an Indian Army in mountaineering.

Narendra Kumar took a hardcore decision to skip his annual leave to complete the mountaineering course, this dedication towards mountaineering brought him great success and achievements throughout his life.  In 1958, when he opted for the mountaineering course at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, he was first refused by his Regimental Centre Commandant.  But Kumar took it as a challenge and expressed his readiness to skip the annual leave then he was allowed to complete the course.  After getting in, and with the Principal out on an expedition, Kumar was under Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two individuals known to ascend Mount Everest, who looked after the course as Director of Field Training.  Here Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary reached the 29,035-foot the summit of Everest on May 29 in 1953, becoming the first people to stand atop the world's highest mountain which is in India, and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was the Director of Field Training of the Indian mountaineering course. Further, Narendra Kumar showed his interest and curiosity in mountaineering and soon he became a good friend of Tenzing Norgay.  Then, he was also selected in charge of the course for the Indian army officers.

1. In 1958: Trishul mountain expedition, 7,120 m heights

2. In 1960: First Indian Everest expedition, 8,700 m height, the first Indian to ascend to Mount Everest

3. In 1961–1964: Barahoti, Nilkantha, and Nanda Devi, 6,597 m heights

4. In 1970 Jomolhari (Chomo Lhari), the highest mountain in Bhutan, 7,314 m heights

5. In 1977, he led the successful ascent of the Kangchenjunga from the north-east spur.

6. In 1983, he summited Kamet 7,801 m and Abi Gamin 7,398 m heights.

During Kumar's, mountaineering career, he ascended above 8,000 meters (26,000 ft) on Mount Everest, more than twenty times.

Narendra Kumar - 'A Mountain of Information'

Kumar was got a great reward as 'a mountain of information' by Lieutenant General V. R. Raghavan, commanding officer of the operation of Meghdoot.   Operation Meghdoot was led by the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi who was called "Durga of India".  This was the Indian Army's efforts to ending Pakistan's occupation of the Siachen glacier.  Kumar's expeditions to the Siachen glacier, and the detailed topographical mapping exercise, as well as photographs and videos from his expeditions, helped to authorize Operation Meghdoot.
