Existence and Time of Srisailam Temple

At Srisailam the most important place to visit is Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple,famous as one of the 12 Jyotirlinga and self manifested(emits a radience) another main deity is the Goddess Bhramaramba Devi, who is one of the 18 Mahasakthis. Srisailam is visited by devotees from every corner of the country to seek blessings and atone for their past sins.

Spiritual and Historical story about Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Jyotirlinga

According to various ancient Hindu epics,this Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Jyotirlinga have its Spiritual and Historical legend, for example, in Agni Purana, it has been mentioned that Demon King Hiranyakashyap did a penance here and offered his prayers to Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy and blessed for his eternal life.  In Skanda Purana, in Tretha Yuga, Lord Rama and Goddess Sita have also visited this place with Laksmana during Their 14 year Vanavasa(Staying in forest) period.  In Dwapara Yuga, during their 12 year Vanavasa,Pandava brothers had spent some time here and offered prayers to Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy.  In Kaliyuga, the importance of this temple increased by many Saints and "Tapasvis"(one who do penance) offered their prayers at SriSailam.  Saints like Adi Shankara Charya, Siddha Nagajuna, Shiva sharani Akka Mahadevi, Veerashaiva Saint Allama Prabhu and other Shiva Bhaktas have spend some time here, worshipping and offering prayers to the Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy and Devi Bramarabha.


History of Srisailam Temple

According to history,Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple existence and Darshan during 2nd Century AD
as well as 624 AD to 848 AD,during Chalukyas period and during Kakatiyas period 953 AD to 1323 AD the development and renovation of Mallikarjuna Temple took place.  

During Vijayanagara reign, from 1336 to 1678 AD. King Sri Krishna Devaraya rennovate the Mukha 
Mandapam of Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple was built along with a Gopuram on its southern side,Salu Mandapas and Rajagopuram were also built.  Later in 1674, Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj also lead to various renovations of the temple as well as revival of temple festival especilly Maha Shiva Ratri festival.

Later in the year of 1949, the temple was transferred under the administration of State Endowment Department according to the Indian Government.

Lord Shiva had appeared as Shivalingam at three places

As per another historical story behind Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, Lord Shiva had appeared as Shivalingam at three places, one of which is Srisailam, while the other two places are Kaleshwaram and Bhimeswaram/Draksharamam.
