Jyotirlinga - Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple at Srishailam
Srisailam Temple or Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple is dedicated to the deities Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati,located at Srisailam in Kurnool District,Andhra Pradesh,India.
Once Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati came to the Kronch Hills to pacify his younger son Kumar Kartikeya and stayed on with the name Arjun(Lord Shiva) and Mallika(Maa Parvati). Thus the place and the temple were called Mallikarjun.
Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is situated on the right side of the Krishna river at top of Dense Nallamala Forest , presenting an extreamly beautiful scene which is imposible to describe even poets also never success to describe the beauty of the historic place. The hill on which the temple is located is also known with the names such as Sri Parvatha, Srigiri, Srinagam and Siridham.
Why Kronch Hills is called Sri Parvatha
Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple where it is located is called Sri Parvatha because Parvatha,son of Silada Maharshi, had offered prayers to Lord Shiva to come out from his sin. Lord Shiva pleased by his prayers and agreed to live on his body. Then and there Parvatha took the shape of the hill named Sri Parvatha and Lord Shiva stayed on the hill with Mata Parvati as Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy.
Here, at Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, deity is in the form of a Linga (an iconic form of Lord Shiva) is worshipped with a flower called Mallika(Jasmine), that's why the name of presiding deity as Mallikarjuna.
Marriage of Lord Ganesha - Lord of Buddhi, Riddhi and Siddhi
Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati planning to find suitable brides for Their Sons Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya. Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya started argued as to who is to get married first. They Both came to Their parents to solve Their problem, Shiva bade that the one who goes around the Brahmanda in Pradakshina could get married first. By the time Kartikeya could go round the Brahmanda on His Vahana Peacock, thinking that brother Ganesha's Vahana is rat and never possible Him to complete a Brhamanda Pradaksina. But Lord Ganesha went round his parents 7 times, thinking that HIS Parents are everything for Him. So He completed His Bhupradakshina and sat chanting Om Namha Shivaya Mantra. Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati pleased and blessed Him for His intellectual. Lord Siva got Buddhi(intellect), Siddhi (spiritual power) and Riddhi (prosperity) married to Lord Ganesha. Kartikeya on His return from Bhupradakshina with His Vahana, was enraged and went away to stay alone on Mount Kroncha and started to live a life of Brahmachari. On seeing His father coming over to pacify Him, he tried to move to another place, but on the request of the Devaganas, stayed close by. The place where Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati stayed came to be known as Shrishailam and worishpped as Mallikarjun Swamy and Bramarambha.
