Importance of Archaeology at Sannati

The temple that we see today could be around 1200 years old and by the story of the traveling of Goddess Hingulambika, it's clear that Lakshmi Chandrala Paramshwari temple has a long history.  The Gopura of the temple looks similar to the Hampi temples in Karnataka.  Besides being a pilgrim center Chandrala Parameshwari temple has some historical history where an inscription of Emperor Ashoka was found.  Recently, around 35 years ago some accidental discovery was taking place.  In 1986 by collapsing the roof of the Mata Maha Kali temple in Chandralamba temple destroyed the Maha Kali idol under it.  This collapsing disturbance revealed four Ashokan edicts on the floor and foundation stone of the temple.  The inscription was classified as a major rock edict of the emperor Ashoka. One of the edicts was used as the foundation of the base of the Maha Kali idol.  These edicts were written in a Prakrit language and Brahmi script.  In the continued joint excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Karnataka State, Archaeology Department was discovered several artifacts such as tablets, sculptures, and other terracotta items were found, and most importantly, few kilometers away from the temple, near Kaganahalli, numerous limestone panels of Buddhist sculptures of the ruined 'Maha Stupa' or Adholoka Maha Chaitya meaning the Great Stupa of the Netherworld were found.  Clay pendants, black-polished pottery, Satavahana, and pre-Satavahana coins, ornaments made of copper, ivory, and iron, a township with paved pathways, houses, and limestone flooring have been found.  Sannati inscription is the only major rock edict discovered in Karnataka. The slab with the inscription was shifted to the nearby Kanaganahalli excavation site.  Almost all excavated items were shifted to Kalburgi Museum.

According to the Kamat Research Database, near Sannati an ancient University was also found which was the rank of Nalanda University.  In this University Buddhist System of Education was taught.
